What is PSS?
Under the new Psychosocial Safety regulations and Codes, organisations are required to identify and, where reasonably practicable, eliminate or manage any workplace hazard that can cause psychological harm.
Importantly, PSS is not limited to bullying or harassment.
It includes any workplace factor connected to:
- workload and job design
- organisational change
- leadership and communication
- conflict and behaviours
- fatigue, pressure and support
Organisations now face a strategic choice:
Do the minimum to meet regulatory obligations
or
Take a proactive approach and build mentally fit workplace
The opportunity is far greater than compliance alone.
Organisations are now experiencing change at an unprecedented rate:
- new operating models
- workforce disruption
- AI and technology transformation
- increased performance pressures
The organisations best positioned for the future will be those that build:
- mentally fit workforces
- strong cultures
- resilient leaders
- sustainable performance
Because in the future of work:
only the fit will survive.
The Pathways
❌ Pathway 1: Compliance Only (The Ambulance at the Bottom
Reactive. Policy-driven. Focused on initiatives like mental health first aid and ramping up EAP.
This is the ambulance at the bottom of the mountain treating the person after they’ve fallen.
✅ Pathway 2: Mentally Fit Organisation (The Fence at the Top)
Proactive. Performance-driven. About putting the fence at the top of the mountain.
It means identifying psychosocial hazards early, assessing risks in line with the regulations and codes, and implementing controls that prevent harm before it occurs.
Mentally fit workforces drive better outcomes in employee engagement, productivity & efficiency, and culture.
